Hopedale Historical Commission Minutes
March 12, 2007
Present: Merrily Sparling, Chair, Daniel Malloy, Elaine Malloy, Alan Ryan, Theresa Ryan, William Gannett, Thomas McGovern, Frederick Oldfield III.
-Minutes of February 12, 2007 meeting reviewed, voted and accepted as presented.
-Discussion on cupola at the high school. Fred spoke to Liz Lerner (School Committee member). She will gather information and get back to board. Also discussed that the cupola will be removed in order to repair the roof. The estimate to have it restored and replace is about $200, 000. We have been asked to be involved in the restoration.
-Update on Red Shop Preservation: Prebid Reviews were February 22 and March 1, 2007. There have been 2 visits. Second time there was two people there. Merrily not sure if they were subcontractors and she was not sure if anyone else was there. Town Hall stated 7-8 people took out information on bidding.
-Textile Museum was contacted to move looms. Merrily will meet with them on Wednesday. Looms will be covered with a tarp while in storage.
-It was mentioned that pictures should be taken to document removal etc.
-Asbestos removal- 2 bids received. Less money $4500. Recommended a certified person check removal. Need permission from the state to remove asbestos.
-The Board welcomed Tom McGovern as a new member to the Little Red Shop Committee.
-South Hopedale Historic District
- MHC looking at it and evaluating it.
- October is archeological month. There is a company that will assess material and check conditions etc. Also they do an archeological survey. Merrily will look into this.
-Merrily shared a sample website of the Historical Commission of Marshfield MA.
-Merrily started putting together a newsletter for Friends of Historic Hopedale.
-Digitization of historical materials grant was for $1500. This is a cooperative grant with the Curators of the Red Shop, the Historical Commission, and the Bancroft Memorial Library. This is paying for digitization of Practical Christian Volume 1 and more pictures which are on line. The cost will be maintenance of $1.00 per page. Right now 20 items are on the web. Discussion on how many Practical Christians we should digitize. Possibly every 5 years worth.
-CPA- Merrily brought this up at the department meeting at Town Hall. Some not supportive of it. Need to have public meetings to educate the public and make them aware of it. Can't do this too quickly. We can have an information meeting at Town Meeting and not vote on it.
-Hot Chocolate Social held at the bathhouse was another great success.
-Discussion on having other events.
-Merrily went over funds at Town Hall. We have approx. $300, 000.
-Notice from Slater Mill. New CEO Janice Kissinger- reception to be held March 19.
-Bay Queen Cruises- Blackstone Valley and Narraganset Bay sponsored-July 27, 2007-$95.00 per person.
-Merrily shared letter from state regarding the work to be done on the Red Shop.
-October 2007 Archeological Month. State would like us to list activities on calendar.
-Dan showed copies of letters of General Draper. A donation of shuttle given to Dan and other cash donations were received.
-Discussion of having an historical reading of materials at the library.
